A white shirt is the most exposed garment anyone owns. There is no pattern to hide a puckered seam, no colour to disguise thinning fabric, and no way to conceal a collar that has started to yellow. Everything the manufacturer economised on eventually becomes visible, which is why white is the honest test of whether a shirt was made properly.
The useful thing about that exposure is that the tells are available before you buy. You do not need twenty washes to find out how a shirt will age; you need to look at four things on the rail, and they take about a minute between them.
The collar tells you the most
Collars fail before anything else, and they fail in ways that end the shirt rather than merely marking it. The first thing to check is the interlining — the stiffening layer between the outer and inner collar fabric. A fused interlining is glued in place. A sewn one is stitched.
Fused collars are cheaper and perfectly acceptable when the adhesive is good. When it is not, the glue separates in the wash and the collar develops a bubbled, rippled surface that no amount of ironing removes. It is the single most common way a shirt goes from smart to obviously cheap, and it usually happens somewhere between the tenth and twentieth wash.
You can often feel the difference. Roll the collar point between finger and thumb. A well-made collar feels like layers of cloth behaving as one; a poorly fused one feels slightly cardboard-like, with a distinct stiffness that stops abruptly at the edge. Then look at the underside of the collar band in strong light for any sign of the adhesive grid showing through.
The second collar check is simpler: does it have removable stays, and are the slots properly finished? Sewn-in plastic stays are a cost saving that guarantees the collar points will curl once the plastic softens.
Seams, and the stitch count nobody mentions
Turn the shirt inside out at the side seam. What you want to see is a flat-felled seam — both raw edges enclosed, with two parallel rows of stitching visible on the outside. What you often see instead is a single row of overlocking, which is faster to produce and considerably weaker.
Stitch density is the other tell. Count the stitches over a couple of centimetres. Denser stitching costs more thread and more machine time, and it holds the seam flat through repeated washing rather than allowing the puckering that makes a shirt look tired long before it wears out.
Pay particular attention to the armhole and the side seam junction, which is where the greatest stress falls. A shirt that has been economised on will show it there first, usually as a slight twist that appears after a few washes and never comes out.
Buttons and buttonholes are the other place a few pennies get saved. Look for buttons attached with a cross or shank stitch rather than a loose bar, and check that the buttonhole edges are densely stitched rather than sparsely whipped. A buttonhole that frays is a shirt that has to be repaired or retired, and it is entirely avoidable at the point of manufacture. Mother-of-pearl buttons are the traditional marker of a better shirt; they are also more brittle, so what matters more is how they are attached than what they are made of.
Fabric, and why the weave matters more than the number

Thread counts get quoted a great deal and mean less than they appear to. A very fine yarn produces a smoother, more luxurious cloth that is also more delicate and more transparent. For a white shirt in particular, opacity is frequently worth more than fineness, and an oxford weave in a mid-range yarn will outlast a very fine poplin several times over.
Hold the fabric up to a window before buying. If you can read your hand through it clearly, you will be wearing something underneath it permanently, which is a decision worth making deliberately rather than discovering later.
Why white shirts yellow, and what prevents it
Yellowing at the collar and cuffs is usually not dirt. It is a reaction between residual body oils and the chlorine or optical brighteners in detergents, and it builds up in fabric that has not been washed thoroughly enough rather than fabric that has been washed too often.
The practical consequences are that white shirts want washing promptly rather than saved up, at a temperature high enough to shift oils, and without chlorine bleach, which accelerates exactly the reaction you are trying to avoid. Optical brighteners mask the problem for a while and then contribute to it.
Construction plays a part too. A collar with a fused interlining traps oils in the adhesive layer where washing cannot reach them, which is one more reason the collar construction deserves the attention.
Who this isn’t for
Skip white entirely if your working day involves anything that marks — ink, food service, workshop dust, small children at breakfast. A pale blue shirt in the same construction survives the same life looking considerably better, and choosing it is not a compromise so much as an accurate reading of your circumstances.
Skip the expensive tier too if you wear a shirt twice a month. Construction quality pays for itself through repetition; a shirt worn occasionally will outlast its wearer’s interest in it regardless of how it was made. Buy the mid-range one and spend the difference on something you wear weekly.
What to know before you buy

- Buy two if you find one that fits. Sizing changes between production runs more often than anyone admits.
Is a higher thread count better?
Finer, not stronger. A high thread count produces a smoother, more delicate and more transparent cloth. For a white shirt that has to be opaque and survive frequent washing, a moderate count in a good weave is usually the better purchase.
How do I stop the collar yellowing?
Wash promptly rather than storing worn shirts, use a warm enough wash to lift body oils, and avoid chlorine bleach. Yellowing is a residue problem rather than a whiteness problem, which is why bleaching tends to make it worse over time.
Are expensive shirts worth it?
If you wear them weekly, yes — the construction differences described above compound with every wash. If you wear them rarely, no. This is a category where frequency decides value, exactly as in buy it for life versus replace it twice.
