Base layers are the most consequential and least considered garment in a cold-weather wardrobe. What sits against your skin decides whether the layers above it work, because every one of them is trying to manage moisture that the base layer either moved or trapped.
The argument is usually presented as natural against technical, which is the wrong axis. Both are technical. Merino wool and modern synthetics solve the same problem with different chemistry, and each is clearly better than the other in specific conditions that are easy to identify.
What each material actually does
Merino fibres absorb moisture into their structure and release it slowly. This is why merino feels dry even when it is holding a fair amount of water, and why it regulates temperature well during stop-start activity — it buffers the swing between working hard and standing still. It also naturally resists odour, which is not marketing: the fibre structure is inhospitable to the bacteria that produce smell.
Synthetics do the opposite. They absorb almost nothing and instead move moisture along the fibre surface to the outside of the fabric, where it evaporates. That makes them faster-drying and better at shifting large volumes of sweat quickly. It also makes them notorious for smell, because the bacteria have somewhere hospitable to live.
Both descriptions are simplifications, and both explain the entire practical difference between the two.
The consequence people notice first is how each feels when wet. A saturated merino layer stays warm and feels merely damp, because the water is held inside fibres that are still insulating. A saturated synthetic layer feels cold and clings, because the water is sitting on the surface against your skin. On a day where you get properly wet and then stop, that difference is not a comfort detail — it is the difference between being cold and being fine.
The second consequence is thermal behaviour in still air. Wool traps a large amount of air within its crimped fibre structure, so a given weight of merino insulates more than the same weight of smooth synthetic filament. That is why merino base layers are often thinner than their synthetic equivalents for the same warmth, and why they layer better under a close-fitting jacket.

Two rows do most of the work. If your activity is stop-start — a walk with pauses, a commute, a day moving between cold outside and warm inside — merino is the better material, because the buffering is exactly what you need. If your activity is sustained and hard, synthetic wins, because moving sweat quickly matters more than regulating a swing that is not happening.
Durability, and the thing merino is bad at
Merino’s weakness is straightforward: it wears through. Fine wool at the weights used for base layers is delicate, and it thins at the shoulders under a rucksack strap, at the hips under a belt, and anywhere else there is repeated friction. A merino base layer worn hard will develop holes in a fraction of the time a synthetic one would.
This is why blends exist and why they are frequently the sensible answer. A merino-dominant fabric with a proportion of nylon keeps most of the odour resistance and adds substantially to the lifespan. Purists dislike them; the wear data does not.
Weight matters here too. Very lightweight merino is lovely against the skin and is the least durable version of an already delicate material. If you carry a pack, a mid-weight or a blend is the more sensible purchase regardless of how good the lightweight feels in the shop.
The washing question
How often you can realistically launder something changes the calculation more than any performance figure. Merino’s odour resistance means several wearings between washes, which matters enormously when travelling and matters not at all if you have a washing machine at home and wear it once a week.
Conversely, synthetics need washing after nearly every hard use, and they need washing properly — fabric softener coats the fibres and destroys the wicking that is the whole point of the material. A synthetic base layer that has stopped performing has usually been softened rather than worn out.
Both materials want a cool wash and no tumble drier. Heat is what felts wool and what damages the elastane that gives synthetics their shape.
Storage matters for merino specifically. Wool is food for moths, and a base layer put away unwashed in spring is considerably more attractive to them than a clean one, because it is the residue rather than the fibre that draws them in. Wash before storing, keep it sealed, and the garment will be intact in autumn.
Where each clearly wins
- Travelling with limited laundry: merino, comfortably. Two shirts can cover a week.
- Hard aerobic exercise: synthetic. It moves more sweat faster and survives frequent washing.
- Cold-weather commuting: merino. Stop-start is exactly what it buffers.
- Under a heavy pack: a blend, or synthetic. Merino wears through at the straps.
- Sensitive skin: usually fine merino, though some people react to wool regardless of fineness.
- Tight budget: synthetic, and wash it properly.
What to know before you buy
- Match the material to the activity, not to the brand. Stop-start favours merino; sustained output favours synthetic.
- Check the micron count for merino. Finer is softer; anything coarse will itch.
- Consider a blend if you carry a pack or wear it hard.
- Never use fabric softener on either. It ruins synthetics and does nothing for wool.
- Buy the fit snug. A base layer works by contact; a loose one is just a thin jumper.
- Cost it per year, not per garment. Merino costs more and lasts less long.
Does merino really not smell?
It resists odour genuinely and substantially, rather than perfectly. Several days of moderate wear is realistic; a week of hard use is optimistic. Synthetic antimicrobial treatments work at first and wash out, which is why the difference widens over the life of the garment.
Is merino too warm for summer?
Not necessarily — lightweight merino is used in hot climates precisely because it regulates rather than insulates. The limiting factor is drying speed rather than warmth, so heavy sweating in heat is still the synthetic case.
Are expensive base layers worth it?
For merino, price largely tracks fineness and construction, both of which you feel. For synthetics, the mid tier performs close to the top and the premium buys fit and finish. Work out the annual cost rather than the ticket price, which is the same reasoning we apply in buy it for life versus replace it twice and in choosing a coat for a walking commute.
The way to settle this for yourself is to describe your typical day rather than your ideal one. Stop-start, moderate effort, limited laundry: merino. Sustained effort, heavy sweat, a machine at home: synthetic. Carrying a pack through either: a blend. The material argument disappears entirely once the use case is stated.
